literature & language (notes)

www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2011/jun/15/english-showing/

Since being in HK, I’ve thought a lot about language: how it is shaped by one’s environment, both linguistically and as a writer; how it participates in identity construction; the various functions that each embodies for a multilingual speaker; the effect that one has on another; code-switching and code-mixing; the different roles of English/Cantonese/Putonghua in HK, especially in the education system; the implications of English as a lingua franca, globalization, and Western imperialism.

(postscript: entries have been rather sporadic/random and I realize I’ve sort of failed to discuss what I’m actually doing in HK between meals… I’ll try to post photos from the past year…)
